Which Hidden Discoveries Should You Look For?
A desert rain frog gives you a reason to stop surfing and look closer. Sword of the Sea easter eggs reward curiosity, while secret shells, treasure chests, and lore monuments give your detours something tangible to uncover. The frog is a wildlife surprise to look for during early desert exploration.
Let the main route wait while you investigate the surrounding ruins. Flags and paths help guide your progress, but optional discoveries give you reasons to look beyond that guidance.
Keep your search deliberate: pause at a new vantage point, look over the surrounding structures, and investigate reachable spaces before moving on. Speed makes traveling enjoyable; slowing down gives you time to notice the smaller discoveries.

Secret Shells: Search Beyond the Obvious Route
Secret shells are hidden collectibles, and finding them involves both spotting concealed spaces and reaching difficult positions. Some require more careful platforming than the main adventure.

Look inside buildings and examine openings from more than one angle. A doorway can be easy to overlook while you are concentrating on a difficult jump. Shells also appear during exploration around the Lost Grotto, giving you another reason to inspect its architecture between water-restoration objectives.
Use this checklist while searching:
- Inspect building interiors and side passages.
- Look above and below your current route.
- Check reachable ledges before leaving a structure.
- Watch for the collection animation when you pick up a secret shell.
The August 29, 2025 update added a UI animation for collecting secret shells and made platforming to certain secrets less demanding. Precise landings still matter, so line up your approach before launching into another jump.
Hidden Chests and the Boat-Lighting Reward
Treasure chests provide tetra, the currency used to unlock tricks. Exploring side routes can therefore support both your collectible hunt and your movement options.

Search elevated platforms and tucked-away spaces around the ruins. Use the movement tools already present in an area: chains offer grinding routes, jellyfish provide bouncing opportunities, and kelp helps you travel upward. Look for a connected route before attempting a long jump directly toward a chest.
Trick challenges offer another way to earn tetra. Chain tricks together, vary your moves, and land successfully to multiply your score.
There is also a reward tied to lighting boats. The August 29, 2025 update added tetra for lighting all boats, so complete that activity when you encounter it.
That same update removed several inaccessible chests buried underground. Keep your search focused on reachable terrain instead of trying to force your way beneath the environment.
Lore Monuments and Familiar Artistic Details
The stone monuments add context to the places you are exploring. Early passages describe the sea’s confinement, the Necropolis, and a broken cycle involving the gods. Read them alongside the murals to give the surrounding ruins more meaning.

Investigate optional branches as well as the path forward. An early side area includes jellyfish platforming and additional lore, making it a worthwhile detour for players interested in the world’s history.
The familiar atmosphere also has a creative connection: creative director Matt Nava previously worked on Journey, ABZÛ, and The Pathless, and Austin Wintory composed the music. Those connections help explain the sweeping landscapes, ocean imagery, and musical emphasis. Enjoy those echoes while looking for the game’s smaller hidden details.
Use Collectible Trackers to Focus Your Search
The September 19, 2025 update added a collectible tracker to chapter select and another to the pause screen in New Game Plus. It also corrected an item-count display issue that could interfere with an associated trophy.
Check chapter select before choosing an area to revisit. Use its collectible totals to direct your search toward chapters with unfinished collections, then inspect the routes and structures you passed quickly.
In New Game Plus, consult the pause-screen tracker during exploration. Keep wildlife discoveries separate in your own notes so a memorable encounter, such as the desert rain frog, is easy to distinguish from the collectibles you are still hunting.
