How to Perform Tricks and Build Longer Combos
Sword of the Sea tricks become much more useful when you connect them across jellyfish, rails, and walls. Longer combos help you beat Trick Attack targets, earn Tetra for new abilities, and work toward score achievements. Start by unlocking tricks from the mysterious vendor, then practice alternating aerial moves without touching the ground.
The Hoversword supports flips, spins, and grabs, while grinding and wallriding let you connect movement across the environment. Landing on the ground completes your current combo. To keep a sequence going, move between aerial tricks and surfaces or creatures that extend it.
Practice this sequence around a group of jellyfish:
- Bounce off one jellyfish.
- Perform an aerial trick while traveling toward another.
- Land on a different jellyfish to continue the sequence.
- Alternate tricks between bounces.
- Return to the ground when you want to finish the combo.
Repeatedly bouncing on the same jellyfish does not increase your combo. Keep moving between different jellyfish rather than staying above one.
The combo achievements give you clear practice targets:
| Achievement | Required combo |
|---|---|
| Nice Combo! | Land a 5x combo trick |
| Cool Combo! | Land a 10x combo trick |
| Awesome Combo! | Land a 20x combo trick |
During your first playthrough, the score and combo display appears inside Trick Attack areas rather than throughout normal exploration. Your tricks still contribute to your score outside those arenas. Check the pause menu’s upper-right corner for your current total; on your second playthrough, you can toggle the score and combo display during normal gameplay.

Unlock Tricks and Movement Abilities With Tetra
Tetra—the golden triangles scattered throughout the world—pays for the mysterious vendor’s rewards. The five rewards require 8,550 Tetra total, with basic tricks and spin tricks arriving before the more expensive movement upgrades.

| Vendor reward | Tetra cost | Cumulative Tetra spent |
|---|---|---|
| Tricks | 50 | 50 |
| Spin Tricks | 500 | 550 |
| Drop | 1000 | 1550 |
| Super Jump | 2000 | 3550 |
| Secret Shell | 5000 | 8550 |
The vendor appears at multiple points along the main route. Continue collecting currency as you progress, and trade when you encounter them again.
Collect More Than Loose Triangles
Open treasure chests and land on glowing blue fish tiles whenever you spot them. Both award Tetra, and fish tiles often sit on rooftops, statues, or other elevated structures. Beating Trick Attack targets also supplies currency.
Tetra sources become available again in New Game+ and Chapter Select, while vendor progress carries over. You can finish purchasing rewards after your initial adventure.
For a focused collection run, replay Frozen Drifts and activate its optional water points while breaking crystals for Tetra. Sacred River also produces large amounts of currency through its main and optional water points.
The final vendor reward is a Secret Shell, so completing the vendor’s reward sequence also matters for the water rail unlock.
Work Through Your Aerial Spins
The Tricky achievement requires performing all aerial spin tricks. After buying Spin Tricks, cycle through the available tricks and directions during jumps. There is no individual trick checklist, so work through them deliberately if the achievement has not unlocked during exploration.
Use Water and Terrain to Set Up Bigger Jumps
Speed creates room for aerial tricks. The Wraith travels significantly faster on water, and that extra speed supports bigger jumps. Restore Ocean Seeds as you explore, then use the resulting waterways as approaches to nearby launch points.

Build momentum toward wave crests, ramps, and halfpipes. Practice one aerial move on a familiar jump before adding more inputs, and plan where you want to travel after takeoff.
Treat the environment as a connected route:
- Chains and other grindable structures: Use grinding to extend a combo between jumps.
- Walls: Add wallrides to continue a sequence without landing on the ground.
- Jellyfish: Bounce between different ones, adding aerial tricks during each crossing.
- Restored waterways: Use their higher travel speed to approach jumps.
Restoring water also changes access through the world. Jellyfish provide jump pads, while kelp creates climbable routes. Revisit nearby elevated spaces after restoring an area rather than repeating the same approach from dry land.
Practice Long Jumps Around Boost Wisps
For Long Distance Jumper, you need to travel a large distance in one jump without touching the ground.
The snowy area where boost-wisp pillars first appear provides an opportunity during your initial playthrough. Head uphill to a platform overlooking lower terrain, collect boost, and aim downhill toward the ground rather than toward a nearby platform.
New Game+ also lets you generate boost through tricks, creating more opportunities to attempt long jumps.
Beat All Four Trick Attack Areas
Trick Attack arenas turn your movement into timed score challenges. There are four, located in the exploration levels below.
Image: Nintendo
| Area | Score to beat |
|---|---|
| Veiled Sea | 8000 |
| Lost Grotto | 10,000 |
| Shadow Tundra | 10,000 |
| Sacred River | 10,000 |
Enter each arena and interact with its stone pillar. That reveals the hourglass used to begin the challenge. Finding all four earns Trick Attack Seeker, while beating every arena’s target earns Trick Attack Expert.
The challenges allow 40–60 seconds, depending on the arena. Combos around 10x can beat their targets through repeated wallrides or jellyfish sequences.
Before starting the timer, identify a route you can repeat. Use different jellyfish for successive bounces, fit aerial tricks between them, and finish the combo with time remaining. If you prefer wallriding, practice connecting the available walls before beginning a scoring attempt.
Beating an arena’s target for the first time awards a large amount of Tetra. Improving your own record afterward grants smaller rewards, giving you another reason to return while working toward vendor purchases.
Extend Your Routes With Water Rails
Water rails become available in Sacred River. They offer another way to remain airborne and connect movement without touching the ground.
The Water Rider achievement requires using water rails four times within one continuous sequence. Practice near a jellyfish at the start of Sacred River:
- Bounce from the jellyfish.
- Triple jump to trigger a water rail.
- Jump off the rail immediately.
- Land back on the jellyfish.
- Repeat until you have used four water rails without touching the ground.
This exercise has a different purpose from alternating jellyfish for combo growth: the jellyfish keeps you airborne while you repeat the rail activation.
Unlock Water Rails in Every Level
Collecting all 50 Secret Shells lets you use water rails beyond Sacred River. That total includes the shell awarded at the end of the vendor’s reward sequence.
Use Chapter Select to revisit unfinished areas after completing the story. The September 19, 2025 update added collectible tracking to Chapter Select and to the pause screen in New Game+, making those screens useful for directing your remaining search.
Turn Combos Into a Million-Point Run
Great Score requires a game-wide score of 1,000,000 points. New High Score requires beating your previous game-wide record.
Completing the adventure in under 2 hours gives a 2x bonus to your completion score. That means a run with 500,000 points before the bonus can reach the million-point requirement.
Plan this around New Game+ once you have collected abilities and learned the route:
- Build score while moving through familiar areas.
- Spend a few minutes on a jellyfish combo if your total needs a boost.
- Check your running score in the pause menu.
- Keep the full adventure under two hours to receive the completion bonus.
For New Game Plus Completed, select New Game Plus and play through the adventure without using Chapter Select. Chapter Select resets progress for that playthrough, so finish collectible cleanup before beginning a continuous scoring run.
Install the game’s updates before chasing score achievements. The August 29, 2025 update corrected combo display issues and removed unintended first-playthrough behavior for New High Score. The September 19 update also capped the score to prevent it from overflowing into a negative number.
