How to Unlock Ancient Armor
Sword of the Sea ancient armor turns your shell hunt into a new way to travel: it unlocks the ability to create water rails. Collect every shell to earn it. If you have finished the story and still have an empty skill slot, return to your shell collection.
Keep the shell reward separate from the abilities you purchase from the Mysterious Vendor. Spending Tetra on tricks advances your movement options, but completing the shell collection is what unlocks Ancient Armor.
The vendor's Tricks ability costs 50 Tetra and lets the Wraith perform basic tricks. It is required for progression. Spin Tricks costs 500 Tetra and expands that moveset: repeatedly attempting the same trick produces spin tricks. Those purchases belong to a different unlock path from the shell reward, so keep collecting shells even after buying movement abilities.
Drop, Super Jump, and Wisp cloak also belong to the vendor's ability lineup. Speedometer and Trick Display unlock after finishing your first run. If you are comparing your skill screen against those names, distinguish the vendor purchases, story-completion features, and shell reward before deciding what to pursue next.

What the Water Rail Ability Does
Ancient Armor lets you create a water rail after three jumps. That gives the shell reward a practical purpose beyond filling out your collection: another movement option for navigating the game's ruins, dunes, and other environments.

Once you unlock it, practice the three-jump sequence in an open area before working it into longer routes. Try it while revisiting familiar terrain so you can see how the rail fits into your existing jumps and Hoversword movement.
The extra traversal option opens shortcuts through familiar spaces. In the lava cave, use the water rail to experiment with more direct routes. Another example is the church-like building that rises from the sand when you unlock the second desert water spot. Its central halfpipe normally provides a route down and back up; with this ability, try jumping directly across to the second floor.
Keep building momentum with the Hoversword as you explore those routes. Its movement supports launching from wave crests, riding walls, and using ramps and halfpipes. Flips, spins, and grab tricks are part of that moveset. Practice combining those existing movement options with the rail while revisiting terrain you already recognize.
How to Find Your Remaining Shells
The September 19, 2025 update added a collectible tracker to chapter select and a pause-screen collectible tracker in New Game Plus. Use those displays to narrow your search before replaying chapters.

Work through your remaining collection with this checklist:
- Review chapter select. Use the collectible tracker to identify chapters with unfinished collections.
- Check your progress during New Game Plus. The pause-screen tracker gives you another way to monitor collectibles while playing.
- Revisit unfinished areas. Focus your exploration on the chapters where collectibles remain.
- Check collection progress if the armor is missing. Completing the story and completing the shell collection are separate goals.
The September 19 update also fixed incorrect collectible counts that could prevent an associated trophy from triggering. If you are playing an older installation and your collection display seems wrong, update the game before repeating your search.
Older chest-hunting routes can also cause confusion: the August 29, 2025 update removed several inaccessible chests buried underground and made platforming to certain secrets less demanding. Follow the collectible tracker rather than spending time trying to reach buried chests.
That August update also added a UI animation when collecting secret shells. Watch for that animation when picking one up, then consult the collectible displays as you continue your search. Restart Chapter and Rewind 5 Minutes also gained a loading indicator in the same update, giving those actions a visible loading state.
Several changes addressed obstacles during exploration. The August update fixed falling-edge reset loops and places where the Wraith could become stuck outside the playable area. The September update improved environmental collision shapes and falling reset zones, alongside the visibility of some interactive objects. Update an older installation before revisiting a secret whose approach previously left you stuck or repeatedly resetting.
