How to Unlock the Tricky Trophy

The Sword of the Sea Tricky trophy requires you to perform all four aerial spin tricks. Learning the inputs gives you a straightforward trophy to work toward while practicing your Hoversword moves. You can start in the Veiled Sea, the second area and the first open area.

The controls use L1 and two sequential face-button presses while airborne. Hold L1, press a face button, then press another face button. The first face button determines which trick you perform; the second can be any of the four face buttons.

Start with these repeated-button sequences:

  • Pommel Left Spin: Hold L1, then press Square → Square.
  • Pommel Front Flip: Hold L1, then press Triangle → Triangle.
  • Pommel Right Spin: Hold L1, then press Circle → Circle.
  • Pommel Back Flip: Hold L1, then press X → X.

Keep L1 held through both presses. The arrows indicate an input sequence, so press the buttons one after another.

Where to Practice in the Veiled Sea

The Veiled Sea provides an early opportunity to get the airtime needed for these moves.

Sword of the Sea — Where to Practice in the Veiled Sea

  1. Reach the Veiled Sea after the opening area.
  2. Head to the right side of the open area.
  3. Break the seal there to release water.
  4. Look for the reed-like growths that appear after the water is released.
  5. Use their lift to get airborne, then enter a trick sequence while holding L1.

Use a separate launch for each trick while learning the controls. Keeping each attempt focused on one sequence makes it easier to work through the four moves without losing track.

Water also increases the Wraith’s movement speed, helping you build momentum for bigger jumps. For this trophy, focus on getting enough airtime to enter both button presses comfortably.

Restoring the ocean also brings back sea life that changes how you traverse the environment. Buoyant jellyfish serve as jump pads, while long strands of seaweed provide climbable routes. Elsewhere, ramps and halfpipes offer more opportunities to get airborne on the Hoversword.

All Aerial Spin Trick Button Combinations

There are four trick types and 16 possible two-button combinations. Several sequences produce the same move because the first face button selects the trick.

Hold L1 throughout every sequence in this table:

Aerial trickFirst buttonPossible second buttons
Pommel Left SpinSquareSquare, Triangle, Circle, X
Pommel Front FlipTriangleSquare, Triangle, Circle, X
Pommel Right SpinCircleSquare, Triangle, Circle, X
Pommel Back FlipXSquare, Triangle, Circle, X

For example, Square → Triangle still produces Pommel Left Spin. Triangle → Square produces Pommel Front Flip instead. Changing the order matters because it changes the opening input.

Use the repeated-button sequences first to keep the inputs easy to remember. Square → Square and Square → Circle both belong to the left-spin group, so track the trick types you perform rather than counting every different button pair as a new move.

Troubleshooting Your Trick Inputs

If you keep getting the same move, change the first face button in your sequence. Changing only the second button keeps you within the same trick group.

If an attempt does not produce the intended trick, check the input sequence:

  • Get airborne before entering the trick.
  • Hold L1 through both face-button presses.
  • Press the face buttons sequentially.
  • Start the sequence early enough in the jump to complete both presses before touching down.

The August 29, 2025 update fixed rare cases where the combo display appeared incorrectly. It also corrected an issue that could put you at the wrong starting location after using Restart Chapter and added a loading indicator for that option.

Work through Square, Triangle, Circle, and X as your opening buttons in that order. That gives you a simple checklist covering the left spin, front flip, right spin, and back flip.
